Merlin: Journey of Flame Review

Play’n Go has plenty of slots based around the legendary wizard from the myths surrounding King Arthur, and they also took the ‘Book of’ mechanic to eternal stardom with their instant classic; Book of Dead. Merlin: Journey of Flame does not come with ‘Book of’ in the title, but this is still a fairly standard ‘book of’ mechanic slot. It comes with impressive visuals and animations though, which is something players may appreciate.

It’s less “boring” than Book of Dead in that sense, but the base game is still stripped of features. You can expect plenty of dead spins and smaller wins between bonus round triggers, and the big twist in this game is that you get an extra 6th reel unlocked during free spins. A special expanding symbol is chosen up front, as usual, and the extra reel means that you can win up to 7,500x your stake instead of the “usual” 5,000x your stake (of course, there are plenty of ‘book slots’ with a higher potential out there by now, but still).

The premium symbols pay between 50 and 500 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and they pay between 100 and 750 x your stake for 6 of a kind wins. The latter is only possible when the 6th reel is unlocked in the bonus round. The Dragon Egg Wild symbol substitutes for any pay symbol to help complete and/or improve wins, and it serves double duty as the scatter symbol in this game.

The Bonus Round triggers when you land 3, 4, or 5 dragon egg scatter/wilds in view, and this gives you 8 free spins.

You also win 2x, 20x, or 200x your stake up front, respectively, and the 6th reel is active in the bonus round. A random pay symbol is chosen up front, and it becomes the special expanding symbol during the feature.

When you land enough instances to create a win with the chosen symbol, all instances expand to cover the full reel. The chosen symbols can land anywhere in view, and they don’t have to be adjacent to generate full reel wins. You can retrigger the bonus round indefinitely as well, as 3+ scatters in view awards 8 extra spins each time.

The Gamble feature is optional, and it allows you to stake your winnings in a double or quadruple or nothing card guessing game. Guess the correct color or suit to double or quadruple your winnings, respectively, but a wrong guess means you lose it all.

You can gamble up to 5 times in a row, and up to 250x your stake can be gambled.

Review Summary

Merlin is usually depicted as a typical wizard with a long white beard, but you get to meet a younger version of him in this game. Merlin: Journey of Flame comes with excellent visuals, and you get some action commentary from the wizard as well. The base game isn’t all that exciting, which is many times the case with the ‘book slot’ genre, but you can still land decent payouts with or without the help of the wild symbols.

The only twist is the extra reel you get in the bonus round, but this is hardly something we haven’t seen before with this mechanic. Still, an extra reel means more expanding special symbols can appear, and it also means that the max win is a bit higher than the “norm” for these kinds of games. Up to 7,500x your stake is possible, which is hard to complain about, and Merlin: Journey of Flame is therefore a solid alternative to the ever-popular Book of Dead.
