Light and Wonder has been known to experiment with the Megaways engine before, and Perfect Potions Megaways is another expanding reels effort. They did similar things in Beetlejuice Megaways, but this time it’s all about getting those magic potions to drop down to the cauldron at the bottom of the reels. Each reel can double in size individually via this feature, and wild reels are also awarded.

It’s easy to get blinded by the 72,000x potential (capped at £250,000), but the math model is actually the biggest drawback here. You trigger the all-important bonus round only once in 308 spins on average, which feels like forever with the rather slow/aquard pace of this game. The potion features are not really all that engaging (nor lucrative) when you finally trigger one, and we had plenty of bonus rounds with returns that would break both bankrolls and morale.

The Cascading Wins engine removes all winning symbols, and you’ll see new or existing symbols drop down from above to fill the gaps. This can lead to multiple extra wins per paid spin, as the feature goes on as long as you keep winning. Wild symbols can help you in that regard, as these step in for all regular pay symbols.

You’ll see 2 to 6 magic potions appear above the reels on each spin, including free spins, and these are either red or blue.

If a winning combo removes symbol tiles from the top rows, the potions above will drop down to fill the gaps. The goal is to cascade the potions all the way to the bottom, as this trigger the following modifiers:

• Blue potion - doubles the height of the reel, and fills the empty spaces with symbols.
• Red potion - turns all symbols on the relevant reel into wild symbols.

You trigger the Bonus Round with 10, 12 or 15 free spins whenever you land 4, 5 or 6 scatters anywhere in sight, respectively. During the bonus round, you get 4, 5, 6 or 8 extra spins, respectively, when you land 3, 4, 5 or 6 scatters on the same spin.

When red potions trigger during free spins, you might benefit from a random Megaways multiplier that multiplies the number of symbols on the relevant reels. When the blue potion expands reels during the bonus round, they will remain expanded for the duration of the feature.

Non-UK players can purchase the bonus round directly via the Buy Pass feature, and this will set you back 50x your stake. You are then guaranteed at least 4 scatters on the next spin, awarding at least 10 free spins.

Review Summary

Light and Wonder has definitely created another Megaways engine slot that sticks out with Perfect Potions Megaways, but we’re still unsure if it will succeed. While the potion modifier system is cleverly designed, it seemed very hard to get those darn things to the bottom. Even when you do get a magic potion or two going, it’s far from a guarantee of significant returns.

The pace of the game also feels a bit off, and we wish there was an option to turn off the music, but keep the sound effects. Up the 700,000 win ways is pretty exceptional, and the 72,000x potential is way above the standard 10,000x max win (although the £250,000 win cap is not). Light and Wonder has made a solid attempt at something new/different, but the math model could use some tweaking to increase engagement.
