Taking a page from Book of Ra (the classic game that inspired an entire genre of slot games) Scroll of Egypt combines the popular expanding reels Free Spins mechanic with paylines that pay from left to right, and right to left (Twin Pays). While the game has 5 paylines, technically speaking it features 10 paylines since we have 5 lines that pay both ways.

Our adventure-seeking heroine is the highest paying symbol on the reels, paying 500x your wager for 5 of a kind. As with all “Book Of” games, the Wild symbol takes on the dual role of a Wild and Scatter, triggering 10 Free Spins if 3 or more land on the reels.

Keep an eye out for the Scroll of Egypt Wild symbol which substitutes for all symbols in the Base Game and in Free Spins. Landing 3, 4 or 5 Wilds in the Base Game triggers 10 Free Spins, and awards 2x, 20x and 200x your bet respectively.

Now, on to the classic “Book Of” functionality. At the start of the Free Spins round, a reel symbol is randomly chosen to become the expanding symbol. If this symbol lands on the reels during Free Spins, it expands vertically to fill the entire reel. The expanded symbol pays in any position on all lines, and all expanded wins are multiplied by 2.

Gamble Feature

The Gamble Feature offers players a chance to increase their winnings. This feature can be configured by the player to be active or inactive. If the Gamble is active, the Gamble Feature will automatically trigger on any win greater or equal to 5x your wager.

Players can choose between two wheels made up of green and red segments and a pointer. If the spinning pointer lands on a green segment, the player wins. If the pointer lands on a red segment, the player loses, and the gamble feature ends.

While we are very familiar with the Free Spins with Expanding Symbols mechanic, we were excited to test the Twin Pays paylines and Gamble Feature. We triggered Free Spins early on our play session by landing 3 Wilds on reels 3, 4, and 5. The game selected the Scarab high symbol to be the Expanding Symbol. This only came into play once on Spin 7, and we were underwhelmed by our Free Spins experience, bagging just over 10x our bet.

Next, we checked out the Gamble Feature. We chose to spin the Free Spins wheel and won 5 Free Spins. We felt the temptation to double these to 10, but we chose to play it safe and collect our 5 Free Spins reward. This time, the poor man’s Lara Croft was selected to act as the Expanding Symbol.

The game designers at Inspired Gaming are taking no risks here, choosing to rely on tried-and-trusted game features and classic themes. While the “Book Of” mechanic is wildly popular with players, it tends to be somewhat overused. Fortunately, the Twin Pays (pays both ways) functionality adds some interest and win potential, especially on 5 of a kind wins. The Gamble feature is also fun and exciting and could be seen as a mini-game within a game.

The game art isn’t bad, but we have seen much better Egyptian themed games out there (although it must be said we loved the Horus, Anubis and Scarab symbols). If you’re a fan of Book of Ra style games, Scroll of Egypt will not disappoint!
