They look more like the usual suspects than Unusual Suspects in our view, but hey, at least Northern Lights Gaming has come up with a somewhat “unusual” title for this game. A lone detective takes on a gang of what we presume are bank robbers, given the dynamite and all, and arresting them can be a lucrative affair. A foot soldier thug lands as a wild or golden wild, and this adds a frame to the position. Frames accumulate until the Detective Wild lands to turn all framed positions wild.

The frames can be upgraded with multipliers as well, which can lead to solid payouts also in the base game. Sirens are wailing as things go down, and you get plenty of fun action commentary along the way as well. The wild frames keep building in the bonus round, and the Detective Wild is collected to progress you along the multiplier and extra spins trail. The volatility is not too brutal either, despite the pretty solid 8,000x potential, and Unusual Suspects is a game we found to be easy to enjoy and hard to put down.

First of all, kudos to Northern Lights Gaming for doing something brand new and different with the framed positions concept. Usually, you get a wild reveal after a certain amount of spins, but not so in this game.

Unusual Suspects allows you to build up frames for an indefinite amount of spins, until the Detective Wild appears to make his arrests. The results can vary a lot in our experience, but the upside is that a lot more wild frames can be accumulated than what you normally get in, say, 10 spins.

The golden wild spreads more wilds around the grid when it appears, which is always helpful, and getting multiplier frames is also something to aim for, of course. The frames never stop accumulating in the bonus round, which can lead to some highly tense rounds towards the end of the feature. Extra spins from the multiplier trail can keep you going, and you need a decent win multiplier to close in on the 8,000x potential. It’s safe to say that Unusual Suspects grew on us as we played, and it comes with fun action commentary as well.
