Microgaming has apparently thrown themselves on the Hold & Win wagon, as so many other developers before them, and 6 Tokens of Gold is their second effort in that regard. The first one, Assassin Moon from Triple Edge Studios, was certainly a breath of fresh air in this genre, and we therefore had our hopes up for what All41 Studios would come up with.

Unfortunately, 6 Tokens of Gold will probably have a hard time living up to the expectations, as it comes with a far weaker math model. Going from a 12,500x max win to 1,300x is not exactly a drop in the bucket, even though this follow-up game is a bit more forgiving when it comes to volatility. It’s still mostly about the HyperHold feature, with a bonus round thrown in for good measure.

You trigger the HyperHold feature when you land at least 6 gold coin cash symbols anywhere on the same spin. This is a classic Hold & Respin feature, also called a Streak Respins feature sometimes. All the triggering cash coins become frozen in place, and you start out with 3 respins.

You will land only blanks or cash coins during the feature, and any new cash coins you land will also become sticky. This resets the respins tally to 3 again, and the feature continues as long as you don’t run out of respins.

Filling the whole grid with nothing but cash coins also ends the feature, as this lands you the Maxi Jackpot worth 1,000x your stake.

You can land 2 different jackpot coins in addition to the regular cash coins. These are the Mini and Mega Jackpot coins, worth 30x and 100x your stake, respectively. Any instance of these jackpot coins lands you the corresponding jackpot, and you can win more than 1 Mini and Mega jackpot per feature. All the cash coins are collected when the feature ends, including jackpot coins.

There is also a Free Spins feature in this game, and you need 3 scatters on reels 1, 3 and 5 to trigger the bonus round. You will first receive a scatter win of 1x, and then you get 5 free spins to start with.

The 3 middle reels will land 3x3 colossal symbols, and these count as 9 regular symbols.

This makes it easier to fill the screen with matching symbols, and you can retrigger the bonus round by landing 3 scatters on a free spin. This gives you 3 extra spins added to your tally, and you can also activate the HyperHold streak respins feature within the bonus round.

The base game was very uneventful for us this time, so you can safely skip to 0:44 into the highlights video. This is where we trigger the HyperHold streak respins, and there is really nothing but base game grind before that. How much we got away with, and whether or not we landed a jackpot, can only be seen by smashing that play button.

6 Tokens of Gold is the second installment in Microgaming’s HyperHold™series, and this time the honor went to All41 Studios. Trademarking a feature name might be good for marketing, but it’s really just the good ole’ Hold & Respin feature with a more fancy label. There are multiple series from different developers that revolve around this mechanic, so it’s nothing new really.

Collecting sticky money symbols, with a chance to win jackpots, is a concept that seems to have hit home with a certain player segment, even though the money symbols occupy a lot of prime “reel estate” outside of the feature. The 3x3 “merged” middle reels is an okay bonus round extra, but we definitely prefer Assassin Moon HyperHold™ over this.
