If creativity is running a bit low, but you still have a quota to fill, there are always the evergreen themes to fall back on. Castaway Cove is hardly the best we’ve seen from Relax Gaming, and it comes with a weaker math model than usual as well. You get to meet some swashbuckling characters, however, and the computer game-like visuals are decent. The base game is unusually barebones for this developer, and the 4,364x potential is lower than usual as well.

This is hardly a pirate game that Relax Gaming has spent a whole lot of time and resources on, but it comes with a somewhat engaging bonus round. The main aim is to collect and upgrade as many coin icon positions as possible, and the coin icon prizes are revealed as the free spins round ends. This can lead to larger payouts up to 500x per coin, or up to 2,000x from special treasure chests that can also be revealed. Castaway Cove is hardly up there with Dead Man’s Trail, but an okay shelf-filler nonetheless.

The pirate character premium symbols pay between 5 and 30 x your stake for 6 of a kind wins, and the skull Wild symbol can appear on any reel to substitute for pay symbols.

Wilds pay 30x your stake for 6 on the same payline, but they do not pay if you land less than that. You form wins by landing matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left, and the symbols must connect on the same row, or one position above or below.

That’s about it for Castaway Cove Slot’s base game, and you need as much as 6 bonus scatters anywhere in view to trigger the Bonus Round. You get 10 free spins regardless of the amount of triggering scatters, and small blue coin icons become sticky in the corner position of where the triggering scatters landed.

Review Summary

Relax Gaming doesn’t really have anything to prove anymore, as they are one of the top-tier developers with several legendary slots under their belt. They can thus afford to “relax” once in a while, and release a simpler game that doesn’t require too much effort on their part, nor from the players. It’s a testimony to their greatness that even a mediocre shelf-filler like Castaway Cove comes across as above average compared to what’s churned out in total every month, but this is far from their best effort to say the least.

The treasure island visuals are nicely done, however, and the characters are well-crafted as well. The sole female must have a hard time keeping these sea dogs at bay, we can imagine, and the base game offers very little in terms of features. The bonus round is all about collecting as many coins as possible, and even more importantly, to upgrade them as best you can. Not super imaginative, perhaps, but at least the feature ends on a high note. No higher than 4,364x your stake, though, which cements this as a decent mediocrity.
