Wonderland Protector Review

It’s pretty clear by now that NetEnt has set their sights on the lucrative asian market, as they keep spitting out reskinned games designed to flirt with the oriental audience. Wonderland Protector is a remake of Wild Worlds, but instead of humanized chickens saving the world from evil aliens, this game is about some rather cute looking witches saving their respective domains from different types of monsters.

The math model and the features are identical for both games, but this still feels like a fresh game thanks to NetEnt’s design team wizardry. It all plays out in the witches’ garden, where they stand on a pentagram plateau with a witches brew boiling in the middle. The game runs on a cluster pays engine with cascading win mechanics, and the 3 witches will sometimes use their special powers to remove symbols from the reels, or turn symbols into wilds. However, the bonus round is the big highlight here, and this is where the game truly comes alive.

Wonderland Protector

You will explore 3 different worlds, each one corresponding to one of the respective witches in theme and color. Each world also comes with a unique set of monsters (3 captains and a final boss) you need to defeat with help from your Witch trio. You move on to the next world when a Boss is defeated, and the feature can even start over again if you defeat the boss in all 3 worlds. The visuals are somewhat inspired by Nintendo’s Zelda franchise, and anyone who enjoys hybrids between video games and video slots will probably like Wonderland Protector.

What are the bonus features?

The bonus features are the same as in the original NetEnt title, Wild Worlds, and both games are somewhat feature heavy. We’ll start with the base game modifiers, and get to the far more elaborate bonus round right after.

There is a Hero Wilds feature you’ll benefit from both in the base game and during the bonus round, and it comes into play whenever you land a winner with one of the 3 mid-level “hero symbols” (each symbol corresponds to 1 of the 3 witches). All non-winning instances of the winning hero symbol will now turn into wilds, and give you a chance for more wins and cascades.

On non-winning spins you can benefit from a Random Destroy modifier, and you’ll see one of the witches remove all symbols except those of her own respective color from the grid. Scatters and wilds will also be spared, and a fresh batch of symbols will fill the empty reel positions from above to give you a new chance of winning.

Free spins in Wonderland Protector

The free spins bonus round is quite elaborate this game, as it involves fighting monsters and bosses in 3 different worlds. You need land 3 scatters on the same spin to trigger the free spins round, and this gives you 8 spins to start with.

You’ll be taken to a new screen where the 3 witches are lined up below 3 monsters, and the reels are spinning on the right-hand side.

A wheel of fortune decides which world you start out in, and each world comes with special and unique modifiers as follows:

  • Ice World - adds 2 heavy wilds to the grid at random positions when a monster or a boss weak point is defeated.
  • Fire Lands - adds between 2 and 4 wilds randomly onto the grid when a monster or a boss weak point is defeated.
  • Dark Forest - adds spreading wilds randomly to the grid when a monster or a boss weak point is defeated.

You attack the monsters and the bosses by landing low or medium level hero symbols in winning combinations. This fills up a corresponding hero meter, and the hero attack ensues. Each of the 3 witches can dish out a regular attack or a special attack, depending on how charged their respective meters are. A special attack requires a full meter, and it works like this:

  • Blue witch - deals 1 damage point to all monsters in view.
  • Red witch - deals 1 damage point to randomly selected monsters 4 times.
  • Green witch - deals 4 damage points to only 1 randomly selected monster.

Defeating the 3 “captain” monsters (15 health points each) is easier than defeating the Boss (105 health points). Each Boss has 5 weak spots, however, and 2 of them are worth 15 health points while 3 of them are worth 25 health points. If you defeat a Boss, you will be sent to the next world and duke it out with a new set of monsters (i.e. 3 captains and a boss). Conquering all 3 worlds simply means you start over in the first world again.

How to play

This is one of those games that sound a lot more complicated than they actually are once you start playing.

The interface is typical for NetEnt, and here we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to get started with Wonderland Protector slot. Especially new players should pay attention, while more experienced punters can probably skim through this part.

The small wrench icon down to the left opens the game settings. Here you can turn off the intro screen and tick off for using the spacebar as a spin button. The volume can be adjusted seamlessly in-game, and you can check out the game rules via the . icon. Here everything is explained about the game in a formal manner, which can be a bit boring, but perhaps useful at times.

The “i” button down to the left-hand side opens up the paytable for you, and here you can read about all the game features in a much more fun way.

It comes with nice illustrations to help you understand, and you can scroll towards the end to learn about the symbol values. The sole high win symbol and the wild are both worth 100x for a cluster of 5, and you also have 3 mid-level hero symbols and 3 low value gemstone symbols of corresponding color.

The time has now come to choose your bet level between 1 and 10, and coin value between 0.01 to 2. This corresponds to a bet range of 20p to £400 per spin, which should be suitable for most types of players. You can also set up between 10 and 1,000 autospins via the autoplay feature if you wish, and there are also plenty of ways to make the feature stop if you open the advanced autoplay options.

Where to play Wonderland Protector?

We have already talked a lot about how to play this game, and now we’ll move on to where you can play it. NetEnt is usually a very popular developer amongst both players and operators, but this game is clearly aimed more for the asian market than for westerners. Either way, you will get a total overview of where to play Wonderland Protector here, and you can get started today with a handsome welcome bonus.

Play for real money

Perhaps you’ve already tried Wild Worlds slot from before, and if that’s the case you will be able to ease into this reskinned version like a warm bath. The gameplay is very similar after all, but even if you’re new to this game, it’s not as hard to grasp as it might sound when you read about it.

The 200 Spins Wonderland Protector Experience

Since this is a reskinned game aimed primarily for the asian market, we were a bit skeptical to begin with. The game took us by surprise however, and it’s actually a lot more enjoyable than we thought it would be. Perhaps we got lucky with the bonus round, which you really need to be here, but we came out of our 200 spins session with a lifted spirit.

The base game can be a bit tedious, and we would really have appreciated a fast play option here. On our unofficial scale of “oddly satisfying” gameplay (where 10 means you’re so enchanted that you hardly care if you win or lose, and 1 means your stomach is tied in a knot) we give Wonderland Protector a mediocre 6.

The pace is just a bit too slow, and even the most length cascades seldom amount to wins above 10x in the base game. It’s nice to have the random modifiers for sure, but you really need to trigger the bonus round to get anywhere in terms of bigger wins here. We triggered the bonus round only once in 200 spins, and we would have lost big from our session if the free spins feature did not deliver.

Luckily, this was not the case, as we actually made some solid headway in the bonus round. We started out in the Dark Forest, the domain of the green witch, and we were up against some weird plant and mushroom monsters. It took a while, but eventually we defeated them all, and with good help from the spreading wild feature.

Wonderland Protector

The Boss cropped up from the ground like a menacing beanstalk, and our 3 heroes went to work on her 5 weak spots immediately. Because of all the help you can get from the defeated weak spot wilds, it’s not as hard as it might seem to defeat a boss. We took her down after a while, and moved on to the next world with a 218x total win in our pocket already.

This time we landed in the Icy World, and were up against some evil snowmen and yetis. It looked bleak for a while, but by some strokes of luck we managed to defeat these nasty creatures also. The Boss put up a harder fight this time, and we ran out of spins right before we could deliver the final blow. Still, we won a very decent 289x our stake in total, but keep in mind that a bad bonus round might break your back in this game, due to the measly base game wins.

Review Summary

We get that Wonderland Protector is a reskin designed to conquer the great orient, but it’s still a well done game with a lot going for it. It’s not for everyone however, and clearly it's aimed at players who enjoy video game style slots with a nostalgic Nintendo vibe. You don’t play this game to aim for the big, impressive wins exactly, but more to wind down after a long day and enjoy a calming slot with an elaborate “beat the bosses” bonus round.

The pace is a bit slow for our taste, but it might suit the tranquil atmosphere of the game. The theme will also be a bit childish for many western players, but this is how they like it in asia apparently. Keep in mind that you really need a solid bonus round to recoup your base game losses here, and the feature can be a bit hard to trigger for a medium volatile game.

Pros

  • 2 random base game modifiers
  • Elaborate bonus round with 3 unique worlds
  • Defeat 3 monsters and 1 boss per world
  • Medium volatility and 2,500x max win potential

Cons

  • Childish theme and reskin of Wild Worlds

If you love Wonderland Protector you should also try:

Well, obviously you should try the original game Wonderland Protector slot is a reskin of, if you love the game at hand. However, we will also present you with some other alternatives here, if you like slots with a strong element of video games baked into them. Follow the links to learn more about each game, and test the free demo version if you want.

Wild Worlds - is very much the same game as Wonderland, but the theme, visuals and atmosphere is completely different. This is more of a futuristic and cartoon style game, and it’s probably more appealing to many western players than the game at hand is. You can win up to 2,500x your stake here too, and the main attraction is the bonus round boss fights in 3 different worlds.

Worms Reloaded - is based upon the Worms video game franchise, and Blueprint has made a fun and action-packed game with many crazy elements fans will surely recognize. Lead your worm soldiers into battle accompanied by the war drum soundtrack, and win big in the unlimited free spins bonus round with up to 5x multiplier boosts.

Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior - is a nostalgic masterpiece from NetEnt, and most anyone growing up in the 90s will have a strong relationship to Street Fighter 2. With authentic visuals and soundbites, you can enjoy all the 8 classic warriors, and fight the bosses in the bonus round. If you like slots based on video games, this is really a must try. Heck, it’s a must try even if you hate video games!
