Spearhead has clearly been trying to break through to mainstream popularity by significantly beefing up the potential in several of their previous book slot attempts. With Book of Spies Mission X they have gone “all in” by not only borrowing the popular and innovative x-features from NoLimit, but also by boosting the potential up to record-breaking levels in this genre.

Visually, the game is very different from the dusty tombs you’re forced to revisit in most Ra-clones, and character names like Extreme Hack Harry, One Shot Suzie and Evil Spy Master add a certain depth to the gameplay. The 5x4 grid is also a deviation from the book slot formula, and so is the 1,024 win ways that can increase up to 5,488 xWays, and far more in the bonus round.

You’ll find a lot more bonus features in this game than in most “book of” slots out there, and we’ll start with the base game first.

The “Matrix-style” xWays Mystery Symbols will land to reveal 2 to 4 matching symbols on reels 1, 3 and 5 in the base game. This will increase the number of rows up to 7 on the affected reel(s), which also increases the number of win ways up to 5,488 in the base game.

Whenever it lands, it will nudge in place to cover the full reel, and the wild multiplier increases with +1 for each nudge. This means that each xNudge Wild can boost your winnings up to 4x, and the multiplier values will be multiplied together if more than 1 wild is involved.

The Secret Agent bonus round is triggered when you land 3 scatter symbols on reels 1, 3 and 5 on the same spin. You get as many free spins as the number nudges it takes to move the scatter symbols to the bottom of each reel. This means that you will get between 3 and 21 spins each time the feature is triggered.

Just like in most book slots, a symbol is randomly chosen up front to be the expanding symbol. If you land at least 3 of the chosen symbols anywhere, they will expand to cover the full reel and generate a new payout calculation. This means that the expanding symbols don’t need to land next to each other to create a win.

The xWays Mystery symbols can land on all reels during the bonus round, and this means that your number of win ways can be increased to a maximum of 16,807. You can also retrigger the feature, but you will play with the same special symbol. Finally, you can opt to buy the bonus round (not for UK players), and this will set you back 70x your stake and give you 10 free spins.

Book of Spies Mission X is far from Spearhead’s first venture into the book slot genre, but it’s definitely the most distinct and unusual attempt so far. While the other book of ra clones come with the traditional egyptian theme, Mission X is a slick and modern secret agent drama featuring NoLimit City’s innovative xWays and xNudge mechanics.

Several of the book slot attempts from this developer come with a significantly higher potential than the standard 5,000x your stake. Mission X is the highest bidder so far, as wins up to 27,000x have been recorded during internal testing. The math model is solid in all conceivable ways, and even though all the features have been borrowed, the game is greater than the sum of its parts (and certainly better than many other Book of clones out there).
