Old Fellow Slot Review, Demo Play, Payout, Free Spins & Bonuses

Old Fellow is a volatile mining-themed slot from StakeLogic, and it plays out on 5x4 reels with 20 fixed paylines. You get unique animal and human character wilds per reel, and all wilds that land become sticky in the bonus round. Landing more than one wild per reel upgrades the wilds with a corresponding multiplier, and this can lead to payouts up to 50,000x your stake. Check our full review right below the free demo game.

Old Fellow Review

We didn’t immediately associate the title, Old Fellow, with a mining slot, but it sort of fits the bill when you get started. ‘Grizzled old fellow with his cutesy, cartoonish animals and adorable daughter (or is it wife?)’ is a more accurate description, and the base game is mostly a grind with wild wins that top up your balance here and there. Each reel has a unique character wild assigned to it, just like is the case in the obvious source of inspiration, Dead or Alive 2.

Apparently, Old Fellow is a collaborative effort between StakeLogic and associate studio Hurricane Games, and it will probably please fans of high risk/reward, sticky multiplier wild bonus rounds. Everything revolves around the sole feature in this game, and it takes you deep into the mining tunnel for a multiplier upgradable sticky wild thrill-ride. The 50,000x potential is solid, at least on paper, but you’ll be hard pressed getting anywhere close to cracking it on a single spin.

Old Fellow Slot Features

Just like in Dead or Alive 2, you get different character Wilds per reel (both humans and animals), but they all work the same way. The wilds not only step in for all regular pay symbols to help create winning combinations, they are also the most valuable symbol in the game. Landing 5 wilds on a payline awards 75x your stake.

Old Fellow Slot Gameplay

Regular gemstone premiums pay between 20 and 37.5 x your stake for the same in comparison.

The Bonus Round is triggered when you land 3, 4 or 5 scatters (mining cart full of gems) anywhere in view, and this awards an upfront scatter payout of 5, 25 or 500 x your stake, respectively. You then get 12 free spins no matter what, and there is no way to retrigger the feature as it plays out without scatters. All wilds that land during the feature become sticky for the duration of the bonus round.

In addition, wilds are upgraded with multipliers according to how many wilds you land per reel. Filling the same reel with 2, 3 or 4 wilds awards a multiplier of x2, x3 or x4 to all wilds on that reel, respectively. If you manage to land at least 1 sticky wild per reel, you get +5 extra spins added to your tally the first time this happens.

You can choose to gamble your total winnings from the bonus round in a double or nothing card game (quadruple or nothing is also possible), and the same goes for all base game wins.

Finally, non-UK players and anyone eligible, can pay 100x the total stake to buy the bonus round directly from the in-game menu. This guarantees at least 3 scatters to land on the spin that follows. This means that you get at least a small scatter win discount, and with 5 scatters you’ll even be in profit before the feature starts.

The 200 Spins Old Fellow Slot Experience

We grinded along in the base game for a while, but nothing too exciting happened for us there. After a while, we therefore decided to purchase the bonus round, and this happens close to the 1-minute mark. The feature plays out for the remainder of the 2:20-minute highlights video, and you can see for yourself how we fared by hitting the play button below.

Review Summary

We’re not really sure what to think about the combination of a grizzled mining theme with cutesy, Disney-like animals, but giving each reel a unique character wild adds a bit of personality at least. The pace of the game is a bit slow even with the turbo switched on, as we would prefer to be able to plow through plenty of spins rapidly to escape the base game grind more frequently. Getting a scatter win discount when you buy the feature is always nice, but the bonus buy is not available in all jurisdictions after all.

The sticky multiplier wild feature is clearly inspired by Dead or Alive 2, but we don’t really see this as a clone or copycat. You need well-placed wilds early on to make a dent, and with some multiplier action going you can, in theory, take down 50,000x your stake.

Single spin payouts of 750x is the most you can hope for without wild multipliers however, but miracles can happen if wilds start to stack up on the first 2-3 reels.

Pros

  • High-value character wilds on all reels
  • FS w/ sticky wilds & multiplier upgrade
  • Win up to 50,000x your stake

Cons

  • The top-tier 95.6 % RTP is below average
  • Beware of adjustable RTP ranges

Dead or Alive 2 - is NetEnt’s volatile beast of a wild west slot, and it comes with an eye-watering 111,111x potential. If you enjoy sticky wild and sticky multiplier wild bonus rounds, you get plenty of that in this release, and this is one of the grittiest installments in the whole western genre.

Desperate Dawgs - is a less volatile and thus more forgiving release from Reflex Gaming, and it’s a wild west slot featuring bulldog desperados. You can look forward to a bank buster safe cracking bonus game, as well as a bonus round where the global win multiplier increases by +1 per free spin. The max win is a decent 3,902x your stake.

Wanted Dead or a Wild - is a gritty and volatile wild west release from Hacksaw, and the simple, yet stylish, installment plays out on a 5x5 grid with 15 paylines. You can win big in the base game, via the Expanding VS multiplier wilds, and you also get 3 unique bonus rounds where wilds play different leading roles. This can lead to payouts up to 12,500x your stake.
