Half Pixel Studio has no trouble conjuring up a decent visual experience, but they’re still playing it very safe in the feature department. This is understandable for a budding developer perhaps, but it’s hard to make waves this way. Golden Elixir is set in a typical alchemist chamber, although somewhat sparsely decorated, and you get magic potions on the grid as well as lit candles and skulls in the foreground.

The gameplay is super simple, and hardly very original, but you can land up to 2,400x your stake from a single base game spin. This is more likely to happen if you trigger the random Enchanted Wild Stacks feature. It comes about on a regular basis in the base game, and you get it on every single bonus round spin. Nothing new to see here perhaps, but still a decent shelf-filler that might intrigue newcomers and casual punters.

Review Summary

Our sense is that Half Pixel Studio needs to come out of their shell, and start doing something more unique if they want to be noticed.

Their initial “warm up” releases are decent enough, but the lack of originality leaves no lasting impression. Golden Elixir is more of a visual cliché than the 2 previous releases from the Microgaming partner, but overall the alchemist/magic audiovisual presentation is decent enough.

The Enchanted Wild Stacks feature was a bit confusing to be honest, as an enchanted reel would not always guarantee a full wild reel. Either way, it’s a very standard stacked wilds feature, which can turn all 3 middle reels wild at best. You get 1-3 enchanted wild reels on each bonus round spin, and you can crack the 2,400x potential from a single spin. The math model is about as mediocre as the rest of the game, so this is hardly breakthrough material.
