We have tried our fair share of swashbuckling buccaneer slots in our time, but we have never seen a pirate hunter themed game before. Top marks for taking this original angle all the way to a fully fledged cartoonish production, and Play’n Go is not holding back on the salty verbal assaults either. The quarrels between pirate hunter, Captain Glum, and the female pirate captain are hilarious, and you get to learn plenty of creative insults in this release.

The base game is all about the Permanent Wild that roams around on the 3 middle reels, and it will hunt down any scatter in view while leaving behind wake wilds. It’s nothing too complicated, really, but still an original way of doing things. Cannonballs are flying in the sea battle bonus round, which expands the grid, and if the hunters win you will benefit from a random multiplier that can boost your total win up to 9,000x your stake.

The premium symbols pay between 1 and 5 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and Wake Wild symbols step in for pay symbols to help complete wins. The Wake Wilds pay the same as the top-tier Captain Glum if you land pure wild wins.

The Permanent Wild (a golden ship) is always in play in the base game, and it will roam around on the 3 middle reels only. It moves randomly to a new position per spin, and it steps in for pay symbols to help complete wins like wilds usually do.

If part of a pure wild win, the permanent wild also pays the same as the top-tier symbol.

You need at least one scatter in view to trigger the Captain’s Due feature, and one of the triggering scatters is selected randomly to be replaced by the Permanent Wild. The Permanent Wild will then leave Wake Wilds in its wake as it moves towards the scatter. When this happens the Permanent Wild may move outside of the 3 middle reels.

You need 3+ scatters in view to trigger the Bonus Round, and you will be taken to a birds-eye view of a sea battle between the Pirate Hunter flagship and the Pirate flagship. The hunter ship aims its cannons from the bottom of the screen towards the top where the pirate ship sits. The ships take turns firing cannonballs at each other, which may destroy part of the two ships each time.

This is known as the Broadside feature, and it expands the grid accordingly.

You can get up to 5 extra positions per reel this way, and cannons can reload in a matter of 1, 2, or 3 free spins. The reload time is determined randomly, and the hitting and sinking of the ships award points in the ship’s respective Pirate Hunter vs Pirates meters. If the Pirate Hunter Ship wins, you get the Treasure Hunt feature in the end. You then get to pick from 3 treasure chests, and these will boost your total bonus round win by x2, x3, or x10.

We found Captain Glum: Pirate Hunter to be a refreshing take on the pirate slot genre, and it’s not too often you get to hunt pirates. The birds eye view and cartoonish visuals is perhaps not that unusual, but overall the presentation gave us a taste for more. The quick-witted and salty exchanges of insults between the female pirate captain and Captain Glum adds an enjoyable layer of personality to the game, and we hope to see more of that in the future.

The base game isn’t overly complicated, but it’s not all that often you see a permanent roaming wild either.

Scatters land on a regular basis, which gives you extra wake wilds as the permanent wild moves to replace one of them, and the sea battle bonus round is, of course, the big highlight. It’s good fun to see who wins, but you will definitely be rooting for the pirate hunters since you probably want that multiplier boost. The 9,000x potential was surprisingly solid as well, so we have no trouble recommending Captain Glum: Pirate Hunter.
