We’ve been drooling over every NoLimit City release for a good while now, and with good reason. It’s therefore a relief to finally get our hands on a game that proves that the crafty team consists of humans after all. Ironically (in that context), Evil Goblins is about non-human creatures, and these are not your friendly neighborhood trolls either. No sir, these are carnivore, man-eating, blood-drinking, mischievous devils.

To their defense, they are quite helpful when it comes to turning symbols wild, and they have other tricks up their non-existing sleeves as well. The xBomb not only explodes symbols and increases the multiplier, it also expands the grid up to 6x7 with 117,649 win ways. The Fresh Meat (yes, that kind of meat) bonus round can turn into a Goblin Feast feature, and the ‘Explosive’ versions of both come with a guaranteed xBomb per spin.

The 5 premium goblin symbols pay 1 to 3 x your stake for 6 of a kind, and this line-up of mischievous creatures are also found above the 4 middle reels. If you land a symbol that matches the goblin on top of the reel, he will throw a grenade that turns the symbol wild.

This is called the Goblin Sacrifice feature, and the “spent” goblin is then replaced by a new random goblin.

All winning symbols explode, and the empty positions are filled by new/existing symbols that drop from above. This Avalanche feature goes on as long as you keep landing new winning combos, and you have 2 wild types that can help you out as follows:

• The Regular Wilds will either land organically, or they come about from the Goblin Sacrifice feature described above.
• Dead Wilds act as blocker symbols if you land less than 3. Landing 3+ turns them into Resurrection Wilds however, and the last wild comes with a multiplier of x11, x33 or x55 if you land 3, 4 or 5 Dead Wilds, respectively.

The xBomb barrel explodes all adjacent symbols, except Scatters, Dead Wilds and Resurrection Wilds, and it also adds +1 to the win multiplier. Each xBomb explosion piles on 1 extra row up to 7 at the most, and a maxed out 6x7 grid comes with 117,649 ways to win.

If all 4 goblins on top of reels 2 to 4 are of the same type, the Evil 4 feature is activated. A new goblin of the same type is then added on top of the first reel, holding up an x4 sign.

If you land the matching goblin symbol on reel 1, it counts as 4 symbols. The symbol multiplier increases by +1 per new matching goblin that appears above the grid.

You trigger the Fresh Meat Spins bonus round when you land 3 or 4 scatters anywhere, and this awards 8 or 9 free spins, respectively. You are guaranteed Dead Wilds on every spin, and you also get more frequent Goblin Sacrifices and xBombs. Scatters award +1 extra spin, and you can upgrade the feature to Goblin Feast Spins if you trigger the Evil 4. Any multiplier is then carried over.

You trigger the Explosive Fresh Meat Spins version if you land 3-4 scatters, combined with an xBomb in the base game. It plays out exactly the same way, with the additional benefit of a guaranteed xBomb symbol per free spin.

The Goblin Feast Spins feature can only be triggered from within the Fresh Meat round, or purchased from the in-game menu. You get 4 free spins with the Evil 4 symbol multiplier active. When a goblin that matches land, the symbol multiplier increases by +1 and the goblin becomes sticky as the spin tally resets to 4 again.

There is an ‘Explosive’ version of this feature too, which guarantees an xBomb per spin.

Review Summary

As much as we love NoLimit City games, there is an element of confusion in many recent releases that might throw some players. Evil Goblins is not the “worst” release in that regard (we’re looking at you Mental), but it’s still far more complex than your regular run-of-the-mill effort. There is plenty going on at all times, but you never quite know you’ve won “big” before the grotesque win story sequence starts.

It’s not really a big issue for us, but we get that some players prefer to understand what’s going on in real-time, so to speak.

The xBombs expand the grid, while increasing the multiplier and clearing symbols away for new cascades. It thus plays a highly central role, but getting Explosive bonus round tiers wasn’t all that easy. Buying features is tempting as always, and overall this comes across as a freaky cousin to Fire in the Hole xBomb.
