The post-apocalyptic world you get to see in most online slots doesn’t look all that dystopic and horrible to be honest, with the exception of ELK’s recent Propaganda and, of course, anything from NoLimit City. Play’n Go’s Canine Carnage combines elements from different well-known releases in the genre, and it’s an immersive, fast-paced and techno-infused release that comes with some innovative features to boot.

A massive Mad Max-style monster truck burns through the desert in the intro, before coming to a halt in a junkyard to present you with the 5x3 grid. You get to meet some mean, yet somewhat cute, looking android dogs on the reels, and the big highlight is the Bone Spins feature. The 4 canine character premium symbols pay between 1.2 and 3 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and the flaming-eyed skull Wild can land anywhere to substitute for pay symbols and help complete wins. The wild is also the highest paying symbol in the game, awarding 5x your stake for 5 on a payline.

The wild symbols are known as Splitter Wilds in this game, as they split all symbols to the right in two when they land. Only pay symbols, golden bones and wilds can be split though, and not other special symbols we’ll get to below. In addition, you can get 1 to 3 wilds randomly placed on the grid at random times.

You can land Multiplier symbols at any time, and these can also be randomly added to the reels like the above-mentioned random wild feature.

The multiplier symbols come with values of x2, x3 and x5, and they boost all wins when present. If you land more than one at the same time, the multiplier values are added together before boosting wins.

In addition, you can land Golden Bones with cash prizes up to 5x, but these pay only if you land a Collector symbol at the same time. You can get 3 to 5 Golden Bones added to the grid at random times, but you still need the Collector symbol to reel in the cash prizes.

You need 3 flaming petrol can scatters in sight to trigger the Bonus Round, and this awards 6 Bone Spins. Regular pay symbols are no longer in play during this feature, and all Golden Bones cash prizes are instantly paid when they appear. In addition, the prize values are added to the Cash Pot above the grid.

The Collector symbol collects the Cash Pot value whenever it hits.

Further, you can get 1 to 3 different modifiers on any given Bone Spin, and 3 to 6 Golden Bones can be added at random times. Multipliers values from the multiplier symbols are accumulated in the bonus round, and the accumulated multiplier will boost the Cash Pot when it’s collected. Splitter symbols split Golden Bones to the right on the same row, which effectively doubles their values.

Review Summary

We get what Play’n Go is attempting to do with Canine Carnage, we really do, but we still think the game would’ve benefitted hugely from a larger potential. Basically, they have mixed together elements from heavy hitters, such as the Nitropolis and Money Train series, and toned down the math model to make the game suitable for lower risk casual punters.

The post-apocalyptic canine world sucks you right in from the get-go though, with excellent audiovisuals and a cinematographic intro that sets the tone perfectly for everything that follows. This is a fast-paced experience all the way, with plenty of modifier action also in the base game. The hold & win style Bone Spins round is highly entertaining as well, but it can only deliver up to 3,000x your stake on a good day.
