The audiovisual presentation is perhaps a bit clichéd in one way, but there is still enough there to make for an enjoyable ‘nature spirit’ session. Animated symbols, animals sounds and an overall otherworldly vibe makes sure of that.

The 3-4-4-4-3 grid is set in the middle of an Indian Tipi camp at night, with desert mountains in the dimly lit background. The reels are filled with animals, Indian paraphernalia and a tough looking Native American lady as the top-tier symbol. Everything revolves around the Chief Expanding Multiplier Wild feature, which can be enhanced with extra random wilds in the tier-2 Super Bonus Round.

The premium symbols are animated when they win, and each has a characteristic sound. They pay between 1.5 and 5 x your stake for 5 of a kind, and you also have a couple of wild features we’ll take a closer look at below.

The Chief Wild lands as a regular 1x1 symbol, but it will expand to cover the entire reel. It can land on the 3 middle reels only, and wilds step in for all regular pay symbols to help you complete winning combos.

Each expanding wild comes with a random multiplier between x1 and x10, and the multipliers are added together if more than one wild is part of a win.

When you land 2 Dream Catcher symbols on the same base game spin, you will see a random selection of pay symbols turn into regular sized 1x1 wilds on reels 2, 3 and 4. The Dream Catcher symbols will land on reels 1 and 5 only, and this feature triggers on a semi-regular basis in the base game.

The golden scatter also lands on the 3 middle reels only, and you need 3 anywhere on the same spin to trigger the Bonus Round. This awards 8 free spins, and you get 1 expanding wild that moves around on the 3 middle reels per free spin. You win +1 extra spin per scatter you land, while 2 scatters award +2 extra spins and upgrade the feature to Super Free Spins mode.

When Super Free Spins mode is triggered, the 2 triggering scatters remain sticky for the duration of the feature. This means that a random number of symbols on the 3 middle reels are transformed into regular 1x1 wilds per spin.

There is no way to retrigger the super spins, but it does give you plenty more wild action as long as it lasts.

Review Summary

Pragmatic Play has made a visually pleasing Native American-themed release with Mystic Chief, and it’s not a bad game overall. Enough effort has gone into the theme to create a certain nature spirit vibe, but the features are hardly original. The 576 win ways means that decent payouts are possible despite low overall symbol values, but you’ll most likely need expanded wild multiplier boosts to get close to cracking the 5,000x potential.

Landing 3 expanded x10 multiplier wilds on the 3 middle reels is technically possible, but we only ever saw 1 expanded wild at the same time during our test session. The 2-tier bonus round is somewhat entertaining, although the sticky triggering scatters block prime ‘reel estate’ on reels 1 and 5 in Super mode. Overall, far from the worst American Indian slot we’ve tried, but not exactly the best one either.
