Microgaming partner, All41 Studios, has tried their hand with many different themes already, but Kings of Crystals is their first stab at the medieval fantasy slot genre. The game revolves around 3 kings apparently looking for their different-colored crystal crowns, and these are collected as scatter symbols in all stages of the game. The scatter collect system eventually triggers the bonus round, or a combination of 2 or all 3 features, and a single/double feature round can also be upgraded with extra features as it plays out.

Visually, the game looks a bit dated to be honest, and the blue-haired king looks very different, almost alien-like, compared to the other 2 more traditional looking kings. A bit of official backstory would have been nice, but you can always spin your own tale as you spin the reels. The base game is fairly barebones, but luckily the bonus rounds, or combinations of them, come along on a regular basis to break up the grind.

The premium symbols all pay 2.5x your stake, except the top-tier green King symbol that awards 5x your stake for 5 of a kind wins. The Wild symbol can land on reels 2, 3 and 4 only, and it steps in for regular pay symbols to help complete winning combinations.

Red, blue and green crystal crown scatters are collected in their respective meters down in the left corner when they appear, and this eventually triggers a bonus round (or combination). The features come with different modifiers depending on which crystal color you activate, but the bonus round can be upgraded and combine modifiers from the other features.

The Nudging Wilds Bonus Round awards 5 free spins, and you’ll benefit from stacked wilds that nudge in place to fully cover any reels they appear on.

This feature comes with an expanded 5x6 reel set with 100 paylines, and red scatters land to reveal a random amount of extra spins that are added to your tally.

The Jackpot Bonus Round gives you 10 free spins, and this is your chance to win the 4 different jackpots on display on the left-hand side. Gold Coin symbols reveal cash prizes between 1 and 10 x your stake, or a letter symbol. The letters are collected in the relevant Jackpot Meters, and you win any jackpot whose name you’re able to spell completely via these letters. The Mini, Minor, Major and Grand jackpots pay 25x, 50x, 500x or 10,000x your stake, respectively.

The Multiplier Bonus Round awards 5 free spins, and you’ll benefit from a random win multiplier of x2, x3, x5 or x10 per spin. You win a random amount of extra spins when blue scatters land during this feature.

You can trigger different combinations of the bonus rounds directly from the base game, and the best you can hope for is 10 free spins where all 3 modifiers combine.

All 3 bonus rounds can also be upgraded with extra modifiers when you collect scatters of different colors than the one belonging to your current feature.

Finally, non-UK players, and anyone eligible, may purchase the bonus rounds directly from the in-game menu. You can buy single features, or combine 2 or all 3 of them, and the price you’ll have to pay ranges from 20 to 110 x your stake.

Review Summary

The visual presentation wasn’t an immediate turn-on for us, and on closer inspection it comes across as somewhat dated and generic. It’s unclear how many scatters you need to collect to trigger the bonus rounds, but they did seem to come along on a regular basis. Not much came from them in terms of winnings most of the time though, so don’t be fooled by the 10,000x potential (which seems far-fetched unless you land the Grand Jackpot).

It might not look like it from our highlights video, but we did enjoy the ability to combine purchased bonus rounds. However, even the Mini jackpot seemed hard to land most of the time, and combining all 3 features is no guarantee for a larger payout. The top-tier 110x price tells you all you need to know really, and this is not something all jurisdictions can benefit from anyway.

While we were a bit overwhelmed by all the feature combinations, we were underwhelmed by how they performed.
