Rarestone Gaming has a solid number of successful releases under their belt by now, and Heroes Arrow is their first stab at the Robin Hood genre. You’re taken deep into the Sherwood Forest for some target practice with the legend himself, and reel 5 is cleverly tilted so the Hero can shoot his arrow from any other reel to hit the target. This is how you win smaller cash prizes in the base game, but you can also land the 500x Grand Jackpot.

Visually, the game is a bit of a mix between “old school” and modern graphics, and the sound effects are very brick and mortar. The volatility is low, so Rarestone is clearly aiming to please casual punters mostly. Arrow Shot prizes are collected in a Tally Meter in the bonus round, and while Robin Hood hits bull’s eye every time, we doubt this game will hit home with the high risk/reward crowd.

The premium symbols pay between 4 and 8 x your stake for 5-oak, and the King is the highest value symbol. The coat of arms Wild symbol can land anywhere except reel 1, and it steps in for all regular pay symbols to help you complete winning combos.

In addition, you have two different Robin Hood lookalike Hero symbols, but these do not pay the regular way. Instead, they trigger the Arrow Shot features if they land on the same row as a target symbol on the tilted 5th reel.

The Hero symbols are either green (with regular arrow) or red (with flaming arrow), and they land on reels 1 to 4 only.

If a Hero symbol lines up with a target symbol on reel 5, he will fire his arrow at the target. This awards either a cash prize (green hero), or 1 of the 3 fixed jackpots you see on display above the grid (red hero). It works as follows:

• Green Hero Arrow Shot awards a random prize of 2, 3, 4, 5 or 8 x your stake.
• Red Hero Arrow Shot awards the Minor (10x, 15x or 20x), Major (100x) or Grand Jackpot worth 500x your stake.

You can trigger more than one Arrow Shot per spin, and you get an individual randomly determined prize per shot.

The Bonus Round is triggered by landing 3, 4 or 5 castle scatters anywhere on the same spin, and this awards a scatter win of 2, 10 or 50 times your stake up front. You will then get 8 free spins, and you’ll see a tally meter above reel 5 that starts at zero.

Rarestone has made a simple, yet somewhat clever, little game with Heroes Arrow, set deep in the Sherwood forest. The tilted 5th reel and the target practice Arrow Shot feature can award smaller top-up prizes in the base game, but occasionally you will also land one of the 3 jackpots. The 500x grand jackpot is, of course, pretty rare to see, and 500x is not really a very impressive potential either.

It’s okay for a casual low-volatility release though, and you can look forward to more frequent Arrow Shot triggers in the bonus round. While the bow and arrow concept is somewhat intriguing, we can’t help but feel that more could have been done with it. The game will keep you entertained for a while, but ultimately many players will probably look for more rewarding prospects.
